# The Data Behind Layover Quality

Not all layovers are equal. Airport quality, connection risk, visa-free transit, and delay data reveal the best and worst places to connect.

A two-hour layover in Singapore is a treat. You have lounges, a butterfly garden, a swimming pool, free Wi-Fi that actually works, and terminals connected by easy walkways. A two-hour layover at certain US domestic hubs is a gamble. You might need to clear security again, change terminals via an outdoor walkway in the rain, and eat a sad $16 sandwich while sitting on the floor next to a power outlet.

Same two hours. Completely different experience. Traditional flight search engines treat these identically because they only see the clock time. Our ranking engine does not.

## How the AI scores layover quality

Layover quality is a meaningful part of multi-factor ranking, which makes it a meaningful differentiator between otherwise similar itineraries. The score is built from several data dimensions.

**Airport amenities.** Lounges, food quality, shopping, rest areas, showers, Wi-Fi speed. Major international hubs in Asia and the Middle East tend to score highest. Smaller regional airports score lower, not because they are bad, but because there is less to do during a long wait.

**Terminal transit complexity.** How hard is it to get from your arriving gate to your departing gate? Some airports put all international connections in a single terminal. Others require you to take a train, clear immigration, re-clear security, and walk for twenty minutes. Terminal changes at large airports can add 30-60 minutes to effective connection times, which the published minimum connection time does not always reflect.

**Historical delay data.** Certain airports have 2-3 times higher delay rates than others. A tight connection at a high-delay airport is a risky connection, even if the published minimum connection time says it is fine. The AI factors in the actual probability that your inbound flight arrives on time, not just the scheduled time.

**Visa-free transit eligibility.** This is a constraint that catches people off guard. Dozens of major hub airports have transit [visa requirements](/blog/ai-agents-visa-requirements-documents) that depend on your nationality. A routing through a particular hub might require a transit visa for some passport holders but not others. The AI checks your passport nationality against transit requirements for each candidate connection and deprioritizes routes that create visa complications.

## Connection time risk

Airlines publish minimum connection times for each airport, and they vary by terminal pair and airline alliance. But there is a gap between the airline's published minimum and what the data shows is actually safe.

The published minimum might say 60 minutes. But if historical data shows that 15% of inbound flights to that airport arrive more than 30 minutes late, your effective risk of missing the connection is uncomfortably high. The AI calculates a risk-adjusted connection safety score that accounts for the historical on-[time performance](/blog/airline-on-time-performance-who-delivers) of your specific inbound flight and the actual terminal transit time.

We think of it as the difference between "technically possible" and "comfortably likely." The ranking engine prefers the latter.

## The best and worst connection airports

I will not publish a definitive ranking here because the data shifts with schedule changes and airport renovations. But some patterns are consistent.

Airports designed around transit passengers score well. Think major hub airports that were architecturally built to funnel connecting passengers efficiently. Airports that were built for domestic service and later expanded to handle international connections tend to score lower because the terminal layout was not designed for transfers.

Newer airports and recently renovated terminals also score higher because they were designed with modern passenger flow in mind. Older terminals with security bottlenecks and long walks between gates pull the score down.

## How layover scoring changes your flight recommendation

Here is where it gets practical. Two itineraries might have the same total travel time and similar prices, but one connects through a top-rated hub with a comfortable 2.5-hour layover and the other connects through a high-delay airport with a tight 75-minute window and a terminal change.

Without layover scoring, these look equivalent. With it, the first option scores meaningfully higher, and the AI tells you why: "Comfortable connection at a top-rated hub with low delay risk" versus "tight connection with terminal change at an airport with above-average delays."
