# The Death of Metasearch: Why Google Flights and Kayak Are Losing Relevance

Metasearch adds a layer between you and your booking. AI agents go direct to inventory and eliminate the need for comparison shopping entirely.

Kayak was the disruptor's disruptor. When OTAs aggregated airline inventory and made it searchable, Kayak aggregated the OTAs and made them comparable. It was a useful layer in an era when the same flight could cost different amounts on different platforms, and the only way to find the best price was to check them all.

That era is ending. And metasearch is losing its reason to exist.

## What metasearch does — and why it mattered

Metasearch engines (Kayak, Skyscanner, [Google Flights](/blog/best-flight-booking-2026-ai-vs-google)) solve a specific problem: price comparison across booking platforms. You enter your origin, destination, and dates. The metasearch engine queries multiple OTAs and airlines simultaneously and shows you which platform has the best price.

This was genuinely valuable when price disparities across platforms were large and when checking multiple sites manually was the only alternative. In the mid-2010s, metasearch was at its peak relevance. Kayak and Skyscanner grew rapidly. Google Flights leveraged Google's infrastructure to deliver the fastest comparison experience.

But metasearch has a fundamental limitation: it does not complete the booking. After comparing prices, it sends you to an OTA or airline website to actually book. You click a button, get redirected, and start the booking process on a different site. The context you built during comparison (which options you liked, which trade-offs mattered) is lost in the redirect. You start over on the destination site.

## The AI agent shortcut

AI agents eliminate the layer that metasearch occupies. Instead of searching across OTAs and comparing their prices, the agent goes directly to flight and hotel inventory through modern APIs. There is no need to compare platform prices because the agent accesses the underlying inventory directly.

The agent searches, ranks by your preferences, and completes the booking in one continuous flow. No redirect. No comparison shopping. No switching between platforms. The entire value proposition of metasearch — "we check multiple sites so you don't have to" — becomes irrelevant when the agent accesses the source inventory without any sites in the middle.

## Traffic and revenue trends

The data tells the story. Google's AI Overviews now appear on over 40 percent of travel queries, absorbing the top-of-funnel traffic that used to flow to metasearch sites. When someone searches "flights to Paris," Google increasingly provides an AI-generated summary that reduces the need to click through to any travel site.

Kayak's growth has flattened relative to its earlier trajectory. Skyscanner, acquired by Ctrip — now Trip.com Group — in 2016 for around $1.7 billion, has likewise plateaued. The average metasearch user still visits 2 to 3 additional sites after comparison to complete the booking — a sign that metasearch is not solving the full problem.

## Google's dilemma

Google Flights is simultaneously a metasearch product and the platform most likely to be disrupted by Google's own AI. Google AI Overviews reduce clicks to Google Flights by answering travel queries directly in the search results. But Google Flights cannot complete bookings — it redirects to airlines and OTAs, which generate the advertising revenue that funds Google.

If Google built an AI agent that searched flights, booked directly, and handled the full trip lifecycle, it would cannibalize its own travel advertising business — estimated at $15 to $20 billion annually. ## Kayak and Skyscanner's pivot attempts

Both platforms have recognized the threat and are adding AI features. Kayak launched a chatbot that answers travel questions and suggests options. Skyscanner has integrated AI-powered recommendations. But these features operate within the metasearch framework — they help you compare, but you still get redirected elsewhere to book.

This is the [bolted-on AI](/blog/why-every-ota-ai-chatbot-will-fail) problem that afflicts the entire legacy travel industry. Adding AI features to a metasearch engine does not change the structural reality that metasearch exists to compare platforms, and AI agents make platform comparison unnecessary.

## The structural obsolescence

Metasearch exists because of a market inefficiency: the same product (a flight, a hotel room) has different prices on different platforms. In an AI-first world, this inefficiency is resolved at the agent level. The agent finds the best price by accessing inventory directly, not by comparing retail platforms.

The middleman layer that metasearch occupies is being compressed out of the distribution chain. Airline to GDS to OTA to metasearch to traveler becomes airline to API to AI agent to traveler. Each eliminated layer reduces friction, cost, and time.

## Evaluate your need for comparison

Next time you plan a trip, ask yourself: do I actually need to compare prices across 5 platforms? Or do I need the best option found for me, booked for me, and managed for me?

If the answer is the latter — and for most travelers it is — metasearch is already an unnecessary step in your workflow. The comparison layer was a necessary crutch in an era of imperfect information. In the era of AI agents with direct inventory access, the crutch is no longer needed.
