Open any traditional travel booking site and search for flights from New York to London. You will get somewhere between 15 and 30 results. [Google Flights](/blog/best-flight-booking-2026-ai-vs-google) will show you 10 to 25. Some aggregators return hundreds. Scroll down. Keep scrolling. There are more.

Now try to pick one.

This is analysis paralysis, and it is the default state of travel booking in 2026. The industry equated more options with better service. Show the user everything, let them sort and filter, and hope they find something they like. It made sense when the hard problem was access to inventory. It makes no sense now that the hard problem is actually choosing.

## Hick's Law and the math of decision time

In 1952, psychologists William Edmund Hick and Ray Hyman published research showing that the time it takes to make a decision increases logarithmically with the number of options. The formula is simple: decision time equals a constant plus another constant multiplied by the log base two of the number of choices.

In practical terms, going from 3 options to 30 increases decision time by roughly 70%. Going from 3 to 100 nearly triples it. And this measures only the time to decide, not the cognitive fatigue accumulated during the process.

Forty-five percent of travelers abandon the booking process because they feel overwhelmed by options, according to Skift Research. They do not leave because they could not find a good flight. They leave because they could not stop looking for a better one. Every additional option is another comparison to make, another variable to weigh, another reason to keep scrolling instead of booking.

Three options short-circuits this cycle. The user can hold all three in working memory simultaneously. They can compare them without scrolling. They can make a decision within seconds rather than minutes.

## Satisficers versus maximizers

Behavioral economists distinguish between two decision-making styles. Maximizers try to find the absolute best option. They compare exhaustively, weigh every variable, and often feel less satisfied with their choice because they wonder about the options they did not fully evaluate. Satisficers look for an option that meets their criteria and choose it. They are faster, more decisive, and typically more satisfied with their outcomes.

Most travelers are satisficers. They want a good flight at a fair price with a reasonable schedule. They do not want to spend forty-five minutes determining whether the 6:15 AM departure that saves $23 is worth setting an alarm two hours earlier. They want "good enough" quickly.

Three options are designed for satisficers. One option would feel dictatorial — the AI chose for you with no alternative. Two options create a binary comparison that feels limiting. Four or more starts to introduce the overhead of comparison. Three is the sweet spot where the user has genuine choice without genuine burden.

## The Goldilocks framing

Three options naturally map to a mental model that people already carry: cheap, balanced, and premium. Or fastest, best value, and most comfortable. Or earliest departure, best schedule, and lowest price.

We frame our three options to give the user a clear axis of comparison. Not three random results from a sorted list, but three options that represent meaningfully different tradeoffs. The first might prioritize price. The second might balance price and convenience. The third might prioritize schedule or comfort.

This framing turns the decision from "which of these thirty flights is best" into "which tradeoff do I prefer." That is a fundamentally easier question. The user does not need to evaluate each option against every other option. They just need to decide which dimension matters most to them.

The AI makes this explicit in its response. "Here are three options: the cheapest, the fastest, and the best overall based on your preference for morning departures." The labels give each card an identity. The user is not comparing three undifferentiated items in a list. They are choosing between three distinct value propositions.

## Carousel design that makes all three visible

On mobile, the three options appear in a horizontally scrollable carousel within the chat message. The design ensures that all three cards are accessible within a single swipe. The first card is fully visible. The second card peeks from the right edge, signaling that there is more to see. One swipe reveals the second and shows the edge of the third.

Our engagement data shows that over 90% of users view all three cards in a carousel. Once you go beyond five cards, view-through rates drop below 60%. The third card might as well not exist if it requires two swipes to reach.

The carousel is not just a layout choice. It is a constraint that reinforces the three-option principle at the component level. The cards are sized so that three fit comfortably in a swipe-based interaction. If we showed five, the cards would need to be smaller (sacrificing readability) or the carousel would need more swipes (sacrificing engagement).

## "Show me more" as an escape hatch

Three options is the default, not the limit. Some users — the maximizers, the price-sensitive researchers, the people planning complex trips — will want to see more. That is fine. The escape hatch is conversational.

"Show me more options." "What about flights on Tuesday instead?" "Anything with a shorter layover?" Each of these prompts generates a new set of curated results, again limited to three but reflecting the refined criteria. The user gets more options without ever facing a wall of thirty results.

This pattern preserves the benefits of curation while respecting user agency. The AI is not hiding options. It is presenting them in digestible batches, each batch tailored to the evolving conversation. A user who asks three rounds of follow-up questions has evaluated nine options — more than enough for most bookings — but never faced more than three at once.

## Training the AI to explain its curation

Curation without explanation feels arbitrary. "Here are three flights" is fine. "Here are the three flights I picked for you, and here is why" is better. The AI's reasoning text transforms three options from a random sample into a curated recommendation.

"I focused on nonstop flights since you mentioned you dislike layovers. Option one is the cheapest nonstop. Option two departs at your preferred time of late morning. Option three is on the airline you flew last time and liked."

This explanation serves two functions. First, it builds trust by showing the AI's logic is sound and personalized. Second, it teaches the user what the AI can do. A user who sees their layover preference reflected in the results learns that the AI remembers and acts on preferences. Next time, they will share more preferences, which produces even better curation.

The three-option principle is not about limiting information. It is about delivering the right information at the right volume. Three curated, explained, and differentiated options will outperform thirty unsorted results every time — not because users want fewer choices, but because users want easier decisions.
