- A facial image that does not meet the digital-photo rules may delay or lead to rejection.

## Common refusal reasons

- **The ETA application must be refused if the Secretary of State has personally directed the applicant's exclusion, or the applicant is subject to an exclusion order, deportation order, or decision to make a deportation order.**
- **The ETA application must be refused if the applicant has a UK or overseas conviction for which they received a custodial or suspended sentence of 12 months or more, or if they have been convicted of a UK or overseas criminal offence unless more than 12 months have passed since conviction.**
- **The ETA application must be refused if the applicant's presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good because of conduct, character, associations, or other reasons, including convictions outside the criminality grounds.**
- **For conduct when aged 18 or older, the ETA application must be refused for overstaying permission unless subsequent permission was granted with knowledge; the applicant voluntarily left at no expense to the Secretary of State after an overstay of 90 days or less beginning before 6 April 2017; voluntarily left at no expense after an overstay of 30 days or less beginning on or after 6 April 2017; or the Exceptions for overstayers section applies.**
- **For conduct when aged 18 or older, the ETA application must be refused for breaching a permission condition unless entry clearance or further permission was subsequently granted with knowledge of the breach.**
- **For conduct when aged 18 or older, the ETA application must be refused for being or having been an illegal entrant unless permission was subsequently granted with knowledge of the illegal entry.**
- **For conduct when aged 18 or older, the ETA application must be refused for using deception in an immigration application, whether or not successfully, unless permission was subsequently granted with knowledge of the deception.**
- **The ETA application must be refused where false representations were made, or false documents or false information were submitted, in relation to the current or a previous ETA application, whether or not relevant to the application and whether or not known to the applicant.**
- **The ETA application must be refused where relevant facts were not disclosed in relation to the current or a previous ETA application.**
- **The ETA application must be refused where the applicant has failed to pay litigation costs awarded to the Home Office.**
- **The ETA application must be refused if the applicant had an ETA cancelled by the Home Office under ETA 5.8, unless entry clearance or permission to enter or stay was subsequently granted with knowledge of the cancellation.**
