How to get the best exchange rate when you travel

The number this page shows is the mid-market rate. Nobody sells you currency at exactly that price, but everything you are offered can be measured against it. A spread of one or two percent is a good deal; anything past five is the price of convenience.

Cards first. A card with no foreign-transaction fee, charged in the local currency, is usually the cheapest way to pay.
ATMs over counters. Withdraw from a bank-owned ATM and decline its conversion offer; your own bank’s rate is better than the machine’s.
Carry a little cash. Markets, taxis and tips in many countries are still cash-first — check the tip calculator for where.
