Common refusal reasons

Refusal is required where the Secretary of State has personally directed exclusion, the applicant is subject to an exclusion order, or the applicant is subject to a deportation order or a decision to make one.

Refusal is required for a UK or overseas conviction carrying a custodial or suspended sentence of 12 months or more, or for any conviction unless more than 12 months have passed since conviction.

Refusal is required where the applicant’s presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good because of conduct, character, associations or other reasons, including convictions outside the criminality grounds.

Refusal is required after a previous Appendix V: Visitor refusal, unless a valid ETA, entry clearance or permission was held and not cancelled because of that refusal, or was subsequently granted with knowledge of it.
